About the Author
John Long was born in Chicago in 1941 and grew up in the Chicago area. After
graduating from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1963, he went on
to study law at Stanford.
In 1972 he moved to France with his wife Mary.
Over the next 30 years they reared three children and restored four
old houses (including two manors for which they have won numerous
awards). John went on to receive his Master's degree from the University of Angers, France,
and in 1981 he was awarded a Doctorate in literature from the Sorbonne.
John is recognized as an expert on the Beat Generation.
Currently, he and his family raise sheep on a
large domain in the South of France. He has taught at several universities in France and has
recently retired from the University of Toulouse where as associate professor he taught English
and American literature and civilization
